vs Mansfield

This was a pretty decent meet for us to end our October....a good bit of season best performances were swum and we added another PSAC qualifier (Terray, 100 back).  We are taking the rest of this weekend off and getting back to it on Monday morning.  Monday afternoon we will celebrate the 6th annual LHU Halloween Practice.

Quad Meet Night 1

What a great first night of swimming for us.  After a rather tough week of training the women were very much ready to race.  All decked out in our new sweats and through back warm ups our women raced exceptionally well.  There was a full set of bleachers and a concession stand.

Today we have an 8:30am wake up swim ... after which the women will have breakfast OYO (on your own) and will be reporting back about 10:45am.  We are set for a noon start and I couldn't be more excited for day 2 of racing!

Crimson v. White

What a great day for racing!!

We had a short order of events ... 200 med relay, 500 free, 50 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 free, 200 im, 200 free relay.

The Crimson team dominated early by setting a meet record in the 200 medley (Daversa, Rehrig, Buss & Taylor - 1:57.11) and going 1-2-3 in the 500.  Britt Rehrig (team crimson) also won the 50 free in a new meet record and PSAC qualifying time of 24.87.  (Sam Durham of the white team was 2nd also under the old record with a time of 25.48).

Jenna Brooks (team white) and Kristin Taylor (team crimson) both were under the old 100 fly record with a 1:03.07 and 1:03.80.  Sara Daversa won the 100 backstroke just ahead of Kristen Capretti (team white).  Britt Rehrig broke her own record in the 100 breast with 1:08.68, also good enough for an unofficial PSAC qualifying time.

The 7th event had Sam Durham break the 100 free record with a 57.07.  Shannon Milstead won the 200IM with a time of 2:27.78.  Alum Amanda Palmer swam this event and broke the old record with a time of 2:20.84 ... she now holds the distinction of holding the meet record (2:26.05) and the alum record!!

The White team battled all day picking up a lot of the depth points and after earning the 6 points for the relay win with a new meet record (Terray, Brooks, Capretti & Durham - 1:42.74) (note the crimson team was also under the old record earning 2 points - Buss, Williams, Taylor & Rehrig) ... to finish the meet with a 64 - 64 tie.

Big props go to Shannon "Dubby" Wilbur - Alum and Adam Stoner - Future Alum for their team dividing skills.

We open the regular season next weekend hosting Cal, Kutztown and E. Stroudsburg in the first ever Haven Quad Invitational.

Thursday pm / Friday am

Last night had a great first half of a workout and followed it up with a great swim/dryland set.

We did a dirty dozen minus 2.  Which is swimming the width of the pool underwater ...the first time across we do 1 press out ... 1 push up ... 1 sit up, the second time across we do 2 press outs ... 2 push ups ... 2 sit ups etc getting up to 10 press outs ... 10 pushups ... 10 situps.

Everybody on the team had a partner.  When their partner was doing the dirty dozen minus 2, they were in the shallow end doing an AO kick with a board and double the number drag jumps (so when their partner was doing sets of 1, they had 2 DJ's.  When their partner was doing sets of 2, they had 4 DJ's etc getting up to 20 DJ's)

This morning we did an hour of swimming and then an hour of power.  Which is simply an hour in the pool without touching the bottom or the sides of the pool, doing various activities with medicine balls, jugs and vertical kicking.  We did the first 30 minutes with shoes on.

Almost Phase 2

I like to break down our season into different phases for a few different reasons.  Primarily to keep myself focused and to keep the team "in the loop" with how we're progressing through the season.

Phase 1 is basically 3 weeks of getting into shape.  Phase 2 is about 5 1/2 weeks of pretty intense training, with us being in the weight room twice a week and a dryland workout another morning.  Afternoon workouts everyday and a Saturday practice or swim meet.

Phase 3 is a mini-taper for the IUP invite and most likely the Grove City College invite.  Phase 4 is Winter training, which includes our annual trip to Cocoa Beach, Florida.  Phase 5 starts the taper for the non-PSAC qualifiers and more hard workouts for the PSAC qualifiers.  Phase 6 is PSAC taper.  Phase 7 is NCAA taper.  Phase 8 is spring training which is different every year.

Monday will start Phase 2 and I am really looking forward to the increase of intensity and the breaking up into different training groups!

Great Morning for a Jog

sent via blackberry

We like to Kick

We are a kicking team ... simply put "the best kickers with the races".  (that's a Eddie Reese quote, but I am sure that all the best coaches say that) so in our 2nd water workout we did the following sets:

12 x
(50 im order @ 1:00 great strokes
(2 x 25 @ :40 AO flutter kick with board

and our 2nd set was

8 x
(100 - odd BE 3/5 @ 1:45 / 1:30 even were BE 3 @ 1:30/1:15
(4 x 25 @ :40 AO flutter kick with board

good stuff.  For our early morning dryland we LOVE do to lunges in all directions (on top of plenty of other leg exercises!)

2010 - 2011 PSAC & NCAA cut times

Below are the qualifying times for the upcoming season.

As in previous seasons to qualify for PSAC's the student-athlete will need to just achieve 1 time to swim the maximum number of events (3 individuals & 4 relays ~or~ 2 individuals & 5 relays).

(PSAC relays have no cut times)

NEW this year for NCAA's will be a cap system.  To automatically qualify for the meet the student-athlete will need to achieve an "A" time ... BUT, new this year will be the opportunity to qualify without a "A" cut.  The cap will allow for higher seeded "B" only times to qualify for the meet.

totals...final night!

7 new team records...
8 new all time top 5 performances...
5 all american honors...

What a great week of swimming...I couldn't be prouder of our 4 all american swimmers!!

We ended up tied for 16th in the nation!!!

I have to say that our university should be very proud of everything we have done...the fact that we (LHU) hosted the NCAA II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships 4 hours away from campus is just awesome...

Special thank you to all the volunteers that helped us with the meet ... and there were certainly a LOT of volunteer hours.

We plan on getting an early start tomorrow morning to get back to the haven ... it sure will be nice to sleep in my own bed AND watch TV where I know what the channels are!

Saturday, March 13, 2010

last morning ...

just 2 swims for us this morning...Amanda's 200 back and the 400 free relay.  Amanda took it out very strong, but faded towards the end.  Didn't have the result we would've hoped for BUT she has another shot to swim it tonight ... always good to have 2nd swims!

400 free relay lead off with Sam going a lifetime best and improving her standing on the all time top 5 list...Terray busted out a 52.3 ... Jenna went another smokin' fast time of 53.91 and Britt brougth it home in a 53.26.  The final time was a 3:33.64 ... breaking out old team record from 2006 by 3.3 seconds!!

Last session tonight!!  We are in 15th place right now ... we will move down a little bit with only 1 swim tonight, but should still end up in the top 20.

5th & 7th

Tonight was a special night for us ... as seen above by the Bob McCool pictures Britt placed 7th in her 100 breaststroke and  Amanda placed 5th in the 100 backstroke.  Time wise we were just a little bit slower than the morning swims (swim offs included) ... but the racing part was good.

We just had a delish take out meal from Olive Garden and now it is time to rest up ... tomorrow we have Amanda's 200 back & our last relay ... 400 free.

Sam is going to lead us off so she will have a legit flat start 100 free time ... then we are going to go with Terray, Brooks & Rehrig ... this is the only relay record we haven't broken this year, so we are going to give it a run!!

GO HAVEN!!

PS - current record is 3:37.31 from 2006

PPS - we set a goal of being a top 20 team in the points by the end of the meet ... right now we are 15th.

what a (friday) morning!!

10 total heats of mens and womens 500 freestyle made for a little more waiting around than we probably would have liked.  Amanda's 100 back was the first LHU swim of the day.  She had a great start and equally as great first turn ... got stuck a little on the wall on the 2nd turn, but rebounded nicely to finish up tied for 4th going into finals.  She went a 56.69 ... another school record/lifetime best.

Britt's 100 breast was the next event ... she was set up in lane 1 ... cutting to the chase (b/c i need a little nap) she tied the swimmer in lane 2 ... and they actually ended up tied for 8th ... SWIM OFF ... we decided to stick with going after the 800 free relay ... I gave Britt the option to swim it to swim it, or swim it to go after a best time ... she didn't even hesitate when I asked and said she was going to go for it to pursue a best time.

She lead off with an all time top 5 swim of 1:59.6 ... amanda was the next one in the water, took it out like a maniac and was hurting a little towards the end, but had a respectable 159 split...sam was next and rocked a 159 as well ... jenna (straight sprinter) brooks brought it home with a 2:01 ... just a really great effort by the ladies.

Right after the relay, Britt is assured no less than 30 minutes rest from her last swim before the swim off can take place.  After all the heats of the relays there was about 5 minutes before the swim off.  Britt was swimming against a sophmore from UC - San Diego ... one of the largest and most spirited teams at NCAAs, they really get behind their teammates ... during the 5 minutes the UC swimmers were starting to assemble behind lane 4 ... our 3 other qualifers and teammates who are volunteering along with a large number of our sports admin volunteers were right next to them at the end of lane 5 ... both groups were chanting and supporting their swimmer.  I couldn't help but to smile and think just how special the moment was ... just gives me goosebumps (a common occurance this week!).

Behind the block Britt looked calm, but excited (in the bleachers her mom on the other hand...not so calm, but equally as excited) ... at the first 50 she was just a little slower than the morning swim (UC swimmer was faster for her split) ... at the 3rd 75 they were .03 seconds apart....place was going nuts ... right after the pull out both swimmers looked long and strong, Britt started to inch ahead with about 10 yards to go ... and when she hit the wall Britt was 1:04.48 ... a mere .11 faster than the UC swimmer.  Just an awesome race....Britt will now be seeded 8th going into finals and upon a succesful completion of the race will be an All-American.

GO HAVEN!!

200 free relay

after a slight delay on a un-confirmed false start, Britt lead us off with a lifetime best ... 24.4, Jenna was a solid 24.2, Sam was a 24.1 and Terray brought us home in a 23.6.  We ended up just a little bit slower than the prelim swim, which is okay...ended up 14th and a HM All-American!

This morning is the 100 back / 100 breast & 800 free relay.

GO HAVEN!!

Happy Birthday Britt!

sent via blackberry

PS

just thinking a little more about our performances and perhaps why the dq doesn't really bother me that much ... before our season started our 200 medley relay record was 1:50ish ... last night we went 1:43 and got 3rd in the nation.  Only losing to the first and second team in the country (from last year ... and perhaps again this year).

in the 400 medley relay our record was 4:01ish ... this morning we went 3:50...with a dq, but take away the negative .02 second from the false start .. and we still are a 3:50 relay ... just pretty cool stuff that these women have accomplished this year ... can't wait to see what they have in store for me for the rest of the weekend!!

GO HAVEN!!

PS - just confirmed pre 09-10 records in the relay ... 4:01.2 & 1:50.0

rest of day 2 prelims

After our relay, we had some downtime while the 400 im's took place.  Then Jenna's 100 fly was up...as previously menitoned before Jenna went a 58 at PSAC's before going 59 ... well, she smashed her lifetime best (again!) from lane 1 with a 57.43 ... awesome, didn't quite make it back into finals, but we were all really pumped about the swim.

Our 400 medley relay was really great...Terray went a 56.8 (2nd fastest ever...3rd fastest of all backstrokers), Britt went 1:04.2, Jenna split a 56.6 and Sam went a 52.7 ... but turns out sam left -.02 early and our time didn't stand ... just one of those things.  We spent a lot of time working on the relay exchanges leading up to PSAC's and NCAA's ... we had to be moderatly agressive in our effort to make it into the top 8 (if our time stood we would have ended up 9th) ... althought that relay was dq'd I really am proud of the way the team took it ... in stride.  When these things happen it is all about how an individual handles it and moves forward.  I have all the confidence in the world that we will rebound well as a team for tonights 200 free relay as well as tomorrow and Saturday's swims.

GO HAVEN!!

PS - collegeswimming.com's message board had at least 1 comment on how awesome our warm ups are!

200 free relay

Seeded 22nd with a 1:37.07.

Went 1:36.45 and tied for 12th.

tonight's relay

I am at a loss of words really to describe how awesome tonight went for the haven swim team.  We had a super sweet prelim swim...and an even sweeter final swim.  When we started our season the team record in this event was a 1:50 something...in november we went 1:49 high, right after thanksgiving we went 1:49.4.  I thought we could give the NCAA 'a' cut a run (1:47.49) at PSAC's so we time trialed on the first night of PSAC's and went 1:45.85...I thought at that time we had reached our max speed, no way could we go faster then that....well this morning I was proven wrong.  I thought to myself, no way we are going to go faster tonight, and again I was wrong....these ladies continue to really impress / and suprise me.  It's really an awesome and weird feeling all at once.

Additional note, I don't think any other team has as many fans as the Haven swimmers do.  We have 44 sports administration students, 9 lhu swimmers, 7 additional "friends", 2 LHU profs, all our athletic administration, 1 LHU VP, 10 swim parents & grandparents...all of them have shown an amazing amount of support.  The students are always asking when "our" team is swimming (and you know what, it really is "our" team) ... or how they are doing ... or offering up "good jobs" ... it really is special and means a whole lot to me to have the support of all these individuals, especially to all the volunteers who are helping with the running of the meet ... special thanks!!

(ps-my favorite part is when our volunteers cheer, when they really aren't supposed to cheer ... the NCAA committee member who is charged with readying the ready room told me that he didn't have any help with men's 200 med relay b/c the volunteers were all cheering and supporting the haven swimmers)

Finally .... another big day tomorrow.  200 free relay, Jenna's 100 fly & the 400 medley relay.

update...

apologies for the lack of content on the blog so far this week ... it has been a rather hectic trip trip so far, but as we get closer to the actual start of the meet we are it is getting closer to me being in full coach mode, rather than host/coach.

our warm up sessions have been great, a little crowded at times, but overall really soild.  we will be swimming tomorrow morning, coming back for a short spell, then the women are going to head to the football hall of fame and I will get at our annual coaches meeting ... after which we will head back to the hotel (I will head to back to the pool if needed) then head to the annual student-athlete banquest.  should be a really great day!!

wednesday morning starts the meet ... first (and only) even will be the 200 medley relay!

Saturday Night in Canton

Is not the best time to go and find a place to eat .... at least with a small group.

We went with a few different options .... and settled on a choice of 3 (cici's pizza, a chinese buffet & panera bread) ... all solid choices.

Earlier in the afternoon we went to the pool to check things out and drop some supplies off...looks great! As you can see from the previous post we have our banner already up :-)

GO HAVEN!!

tomorrow morning we are going to get our qualifers up at the "usual time” of 8am. Go on our first field trip (i.e. getting them out of the hotel) to a super wal mart for a supply run … I need to buy some deodrant (and soon!) then drop them off and bring the rest of the group to the pool to do a few final preperations before our crop of volunteers arrives.

Registration begins at 4pm…which is the same time the pool opens for the teams. I plan on getting the women in the pool in the evening.

This Week...

This week has been super busy ... AND, it's only Wednesday morning.  (but that is a good thing).

Our 4 national qualifers are looking great in the water, swimming very similar workouts (and going just as fast ... if not faster) that we did leading up to PSAC's.

I will be providing daily updates with how our trip goes (starting Saturday night!)

Great Meet!!

What a great weekend! First thing that sticks out is just how FAST the PSAC is...from top to bottom we are a part of the strongest swimming in D2.

We qualified our first swimmer in school history 3 years ago ... This weekend we qualified 4 swimmers for the national championships (which we are hosting). What a great feeling.

10 school records were set this weekend. Even more all time top 5 performances. 2 relays made all psac. Britt is all psac in the 100 breast too. Terray repeated as the 200 back champion swimming her 2nd best time ever.

Amanda Palmer finished up a stellar 4 year career in style!!

I could go on and on but it's time for a little nap on the bus ride back.

PS - I have always wanted to have a set of parents that battle for seats together, wear the same special shirt, and get involved in a team cheer ... This weekend we had that set led by Mrs Campbell and Kim! Just awesome!

Sunday Prelims

Started with the 200 back this morning ... Amanda had a solid morning swim and will be seeded first going into tonight's finals.

100 free was the next event ... Sam Durham went a lifetime best, another top 5 performance, and will be swimming it again in the 15th spot.  Jenna Brooks also swam the 100 free and smashed her lifetime best!

200 breast saw Britt Rehrig go a lifetime best, just missing our school record...her time will have her swimming in the 10th spot tonight.

200 fly had 2 LHU swimmers.  Amanda Palmer had a season best swim and a gutsy last 50.  Shannon Milstead swam a lifetime best AND a time that puts her 4th on our all time top 5 list.

Kasey then swam the 1650 free with a time that has her seeded 9th going into tonight. If she beats any of the top 8 swimmers tonight she will make the top 16.  Her swim was a new school record, besting her time from last year.

~I wont have a chance to type up a full report after the next session, but will do my best to upload pictures and a few blurbs via the crack berry.

You will be able to check for the results by clicking HERE there will be a Sunday PM link with the results listed.

Sat Finals

WOW...great night of swimming for the Lady Eagles.

200 Medley Relay placed 3rd, All-PSAC honors, and another NCAA "a" cut (just a tad slower than thursday's time trial)

Amanda Palmer had her 2nd and 3rd fastest time every in the 400IM, a very grueling event and I am really proud of how she swam it.

Jenna Brooks...100 fly.  Rocked it!  ended up 8th overall ... breaking one of the oldest LHU school records!  58.25.  (before this weekend Jenna had never been under 1:00 on a flat start)

Britt Rehrig...100 breast.  Placed 3rd.  swimming a 1:05.89 this morning and 1:05.58 this afternoon ... her first 2 times under 1:06.  AWESOME!!!!

Amanda Terray...100 back.  Placed 2nd, 3rd year in a row ... 56.80.  Fastest time ever!!!

800 Free relay...same school record setters as last year ... (different order this year) lead off with Terray (1:57.30 ... 200 free school record!!) Campbell, Durham & Palmer ... broke their school record with a 7:58.55.  Placed 8th again this year!

BIG swims tomorrow, 2 sessions to go!

Wegmans Lunch

Wegmans lunch is quite delish ... so delish that we saw a representative from just about every PSAC school there for lunch.  I enjoyed some Red Robin with my mom, sister, brian and fiance Kim (#1 fan ... though she says #2).

Just want to go on record now to say that ski jumping in the winter olympics is amazing ... perhaps another sport that relies on a great streamline for a quality result.

Go Haven.

GREAT morning

Started with Amanda Palmer in the 400IM ... she was right on her best ever/school record and came up less than a second short ... she will be in the middle of the pool tonight in the consolation heat.  (which is the best possible spot for her!!)

100 fly saw Sarah Navarro go a lifetime best, and Shannon Milstead just miss her lifetime best.  Jenna Brooks went a smoking fast 58.25.  Good enough for a new school record and to swim tonight as the 7th seed.

100 breast saw Sarah Navarro so another lifetime best, dropping some serious time!  Britt Rehrig went in as the 3rd seed and will be swimming tonight as the 3rd seed as she went a lifetime best/breaking her school record.

100 back saw 2 time PSAC runner up Amanda Terray break her googles right before the start of the race ... after a mad dash to get them went a really solid time (faster than her 400 med relay lead off last night).  She will be swimming tonight as the 2nd seed.

We will also add in the 200 medley relay ... we are the 4th seed, but if we go the same time that we did during the time trial Thursday night we will have a great shot making some more history.  It will be a REALLY great race.  Can't wait.

Going to try and nap now ...  GO HAVEN!!

Lunch

Today's lunch was a subway / chick-filia option.  The team will be absolutely dismayed when they read this to find out that I have never been to a chick filia before...a few of them are moderately obsessed with that place.

I give my first dining experience a C+ /B- ... taking into account the waffle fries as bonus points b/c I LOVE waffle fries and the Styrofoam cups.  (although horrible for the environment, my drink stays colder longer!)  Negative points for the BBQ sauce.  It is a bit lacking in flavor and the packets are not made for easy dipping (huge waffle fries don't dip into the bbq very well).

Anyways ... had a reeses PB cup for dessert and now I am watching Curling.  This "sport" is fascinating and way too much fun to watch.

Crushing the Top 5 Times List!!

Kasey's 1000 last night ... new school record (#1)

Sarah Navarro's 200IM ties #5
Amanda Palmer's 200IM #3

50 Free
Jenna ended up 5th ... 3 heats later, Rehrig went fast enough to get 4th, which ended up bumping Jenna off the list .... but it's pretty awesome that in the matter of 5 minutes we had 2 top 5 times ... and in a matter of 45 minutes we had 4!! (200IM is the event before the 50 free)

In 2 Sessions we have had 5 new performances!!

Quick Update

Kasey's 500 free was very soild and after the 1000 it is tough to get up and do that race the next morning.

The 200 IM had sarah and palmer swim lifetim bests. Great start to the meet for them!!

The 50 free had jenna going a 24.9 (going 24 before she ever went 25) Milstead went a lifetime best. Sam had a tough start but came back very strong!! Terray and Rehrig made it back to finals in 13th and 15th place.

Add in the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay tonight!

GO HAVEN!!!

Kasey had just a solid swim from start to finish.  She has really come a long way this year and her new school record/lifetime best was just awesome for her.

The 200 medley relay exceeded all expectations I had for them ... just awesome.  We have some really good momentum going into the rest of the meet ... the tough part will be to keep them on cloud 9 so we can continue to swim as awesome as we did tonight.

prelims tomorrow...
500 free (kasey)
200 im (palmer / navarro)
50 free (brooks, milstead, terray, rehrig, durham)
