Final ThrowBack of the Summer!

The final ThrowBack of the summer is a look back at one of the greatest moments for not only Haven Swimming as a program, but also as a University. We are talking about when the Haven hosted the Division II NCAA Meet in Canton Ohio in March of 2010.
The entire month can be viewed HERE. I strongly encourage everyone to check it out!

Not only was this a shining moment, but it would have not been possible without a whole crew of volunteers from the Sport Administration program on campus. They provided nearly 100 workers to make the week long event possible.

That led to a crazy awesome environment every single time our women raced. There were always dozens of people on the pool deck and around that wanted to see The Haven do well, and the team of Amanda Terray, Britt Rehrig, Jenna Brooks, and Sam Durham didn’t disappoint. Walking away with hardware galore, the women topped it off with LHU’s highest finish as a team in the history of the program at the NCAA meet at 16th, and finished with a 3rd place finish in the 200 Medley Relay 1:43.83.

A great week in the history of our program is a great way to cap off the ThrowBacks of the summer! But….there will be a bonus one posted later! Stay tuned and GO HAVEN!

And We're Off....

Sunday was our traditional "everything you need to know about swimming at the Haven" meeting, just clocking in at just over an hour and forty minutes. To say I'm a bit of a talker is an understatement, but we also had a huge amount of stuff to cover, as well as introductions for our team.

By the way, we have a roster of 22, and we asked them for something interesting about themselves that is not swimming related. We got some really cool answers. Over the summer our team has been well traveled, with several taking trips overseas and even a skydiver. Going to be a great season with not only some great swimmers but great people.

We've had our individual meetings today and the rest of this week to chat about goals for the season and Jimmy and I are as excited as can be to get it going! Haven Nation!

ThrowBack Thursday: Halloween Practice

With swim season upon us, its time to take a look at yet another Haven Swimming favorite: The annual Halloween Practice. This practice always seems to come at the exact correct time of the year, when the team is exhausted from Phase 2 workouts (some of the hardest of the season.)

The Halloween Practice is also famous for a few things; apple bob, eating candy while your friends have to swim butterfly, and of course belly flops.

This practice is a favorite of former Head Coach Andy Waeger, who before passing it along to me brought it with him from his former coaching digs at Slippery Rock University.

Record breaking again this year.  Each year seems like I 'invest' more and more in what might be one of the more fun 'workouts' of the season.  This year a shade under 100 bones was spent on the treats...(don't worry parents, there were some apples in there too).  Recently we started having our special practice the day after halloween b/c the candy get's marked down to 50% off at wal mart the day after thanksgiving...and when pinching pennies, this is the best deal around! (so yeah, the 100 bucks was at the 50% rate)

The concept is simple.  Draw a slip of paper from the bowl, where there could be anything ... the team favorite is 'candy' ... this is where the team his the 'pumpkin'(aka gatorade jug) for their candy.  There are also such mini sets, such as a 200 im or a few 25's AO from a dive.  Some of the more recent favorites include "pick 4 people to do a 100 fly with you, everyone else Candy!" ... or "pick 5 people to do a 100 fly, not including yourself and you can't pick yourself, to do a 100 fly, everyone else Candy!"  .... I picked up on that one by watching Survior.  There is also the Square butterfly ... (fyi: no lane lines for halloween practice) where the team swims length / width / length / width of the pool butterfly ...

Then there is the Apple Bob ... of course we don't put in the same number of apples as women on the team.  We put a few less in ... if you make it back to the shallow end wall with an apple you can enjoy your apple while those who didn't make it back with an apple enjoy some butterfly swimming.

Then the all time favorite ... belly flop contest.  Most of the team usually "opt out" but there are few brave souls.

This is a great reward practice for all the hard work the women have been putting into the season so far...we are back at it tomorrow before 6am!  No time to rest!  Go Haven.

Improvements All Summer!

It has been a summer of construction and renovation here in the Haven. The beginning of the semester will be the debut of the brand new Lock Haven University Science Center, pictured above with the original proposed sketch of the building from April of 2010.

The gym floor in Thomas Field House is nearing completion as well as pictured below. This week GOLHU.com will have a full report of the floor project, with before and after photos to really show the improvement that has been made.

ThrowBack Thursday...Day Trip to Austin!

Today’s ThrowBack Thursday comes to us from the 2010-2011 season on the road to the NCAA DII National Meet in San Antonio Texas.

LHU's Swimming program has a long history with the Longhorns Swim Camp in the summertime, so before the meet got going the women took a quick day trip on I-35 to see the state capitol, campus, and the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center (a great destination for any swimmer). At any given time in the Texas Swim Center, there are several Olympians working out, and on this day they happened to run into Pennsylvania native Brendan Hansen.

Below is Jenna Brooks, Amanda Terray, Sam Durham, and Britt Rehrig with the 6 time Olympic medalist!

We had a great morning warm up swim, wasn't too crowded as a lot of the teams fly in on Monday instead of Sunday.  We stopped about 30 minutes into the 70 minuteish drive at olive garden where we all partook in some mass soup, salad & breadsticks.  Back on the road we had a scenic drive and made it into Austin going right to the pool.  While walking in we saw Brendan Hansen and Dave Walters.  We watched the the finishing parts of the womens workout and only the start of the mens.  The women met a lot of coaches and a few swimmers.  I was a little worried that they were getting bored, but they assured me that was not the case.

(for those who don't know I have had the privilege of working the UT swim camp 7 summers and really enjoy the UT team, campus and the City in general).

Afterwards we did a quick "tour da austin" with stops at Mellow Johnnys (Lance Armstrong's rather expensive bike shop), the Coop & Tylers, the women bought a few souvenirs ... I have a new pair of Sanuk flip flops (and Kim has a pair waiting for her too!) ... we dined at central market with UT swim camp director Jon Alter (Central Market is a made to order type of wegmans)

A supply run at Wal Mart on the way back and we are all set to go.  8:15 wake up call / 8:45am depature for a warm up swim tomorrow.  The team will have some down time in the afternoon at the Riverwalk (but I will be calling it the RiverSitDown....so they don't get their legs too tired) while I have a coaches meeting.

Should mention that our sweet van also still has the free Sirius Sat Radio so we have been rockin' out (when i say we I definitely mean the 4 girls and not me) to Sirius hits 1 and a little bit of the pulse (Channel 12) after hearing the same 20 songs for 2 days... i have yet to subject them to any talk radio.

ThrowBack Thursday: Crimson and White Edition!

Today’s Haven Swimming ThrowBack Thursday is one of the best Haven Swimming traditions of all time, the annual Crimson and White meet!

Each year, before competition is underway the team is divided into two teams (Crimson and White) and we have an intersquad meet. The meet has taken a life of its own over the years, evolving into each team having their own theme, an increased alumni participation, and of course its own set of records! This meet is a great reason to have the women get up and race in the early season, and they look forward to it every year.

This year’s meet will be held on Saturday, September 28th at 1pm. If you’re an Alum,, we’d love to see you at The Haven!

The following is a link to the month of the blog posts, pictures of the team from the year, and pictures of Alum that have participated over the years.
