Dry-Land

This morning's workout was our first Dry-Land session.  Most of the pictures ended up a little blurry b/c the women didn't stop moving for the entire 60 minute session!

Day 1 of the 2011 - 2012 Season

Tomorrow (wednesday) we will be kicking off our season with our new first practice tradition ... time trials.  Each of the women will be swimming their 3 strongest events (some of the distance women will swim an 'off/shorter' 3rd event).

The expectation is that each of the women will be 5% of their lifetime best swim.

Due to some ridiculous class schedules this fall we are going to have to start the trials bright and early!

Stay tuned for some updates...

Day 1

The 2011-2012 season is upon us ... day 1 of classes today with our annual way too long of a team meeting tonight where everyone will have all their paperwork.

Some big changes for our team this year...an all time high roster of 25 (6 more than last year) will allow us to do something great things in training.  We are going to have at least 3 different training groups that will put more of a focus on specific events training...(we have always done this to a certain degree, but with the entire team practicing at the same time ... now we different training times for these groups).

Lots to look forward to ... stay tuned for frequent updates!!

Summer Update

It has been pretty slow here in Lock Haven so far this summer.  I have been working on some finer details for our training trip along with a few fundraising projects that we have in store for next year.  Our roster is looking spectacular and I just hope the team is working hard to stay (or get) in shape!

quick re-cap of day 2

long day today ... the morning session was super long, writing this now it seems like almost 2 days ago that we swam the prelims.  we had a -.01 exchange on the 200 free relay was lead to another heartbreaking dq, but we took our licks and in matter of a few minutes we were ready to move on and focus on the 100 flys and 400 med relay.

Jenna and Britt were both in the same heat of the 100 fly ... both had great swims and i would be lying if I said I remember much from it, other than the first 50 for both was wayyyyy faster than their previous best and when the finished the 100 their times were wayyyy faster than their previous lifetime best!!  Jenna broke her own school record and Britt just missed moving into the 2nd spot on the all time top 5 list.

400 med relay prelims we preached SAFE / SLOW starts so that we'd be swimming at night for "certificates" ... our time this morning was faster than we had swum at PSACs and broke the school record ... tonight's finals was just wicked fast for us and the women swam an exceptional relay and dropped some more serious time, with safe exchanges.  We are now coming how as HM All - Americans.

100 back for Amanda and 100 breast for Britt tomorrow morning.

Relay

We had a very solid swim this morning.  A great prelim swim.  There were a LOT of DQ's based on the reaction pads...they called us for a false start by -.04 ... everyone with both biasis and a nonbiasis opinions that I spoke too said no way.  I am also in the no way category, but the way the timing system works anything from -.01 to -.09 cannot be overturned by human, the computer is always right.

We are going to take the session off tonight, and rest up for a big day tomorrow ... 200 free relay & 400 medley relays, along with Britt and Jenna in the 100 fly.  As Josh Davis said at the banquet, if something bad happens put it behind you and move forward ... I told them that we will rest up and make statement tomorrow in the 400 Medley.

had the annual championship banquet tonight downtown.  we enjoyed some quality pasta and chicken, the traditional banquet dinner.  we joined the Edinboro & Kutztown contingent at their table.  Josh Davis was the keynote speaker ... very cool.  I have had the privilege of hearing him speak multiple times on Longhorn Swim Camp Fridays and always enjoy it.

We received a copy of the heat sheet for tomorrow session.  We start off with Britt's 200 im (heat 3 lane 2), Sam's 50 free (heat 1 lane 8) and then after a 20 minute break our 200 medley relay is in heat 3 (of 3) lane 3 ... right next to defending champion Wayne State ... a GREAT spot to be.

As Bart Scott says .... "Can't Wait"

pre race day

had another good warm up session ... followed by a little downtime at the hotel before i dropped them off at the alamo before heading to the mandatory coaches meeting.  nothing groundbreaking really happened or was discussed at the meeting, just a lot of housekeeping items.

the women enjoyed some time downtown and had lunch of Dicks Last Resort ... after picking them up we stopped at the tower where they took a trip to the top ... 75 stories high.  i have no problem admitting that i whimped out and stayed behind.  i did purchase a really interesting looking book on the history of Texas.

We made it back to the hotel with britt's parents pulling in right behind us.  We are heading to the banquet in about an hour.  Love free food !!

Day Trip to Austin

photos: stolen from Terray's facebook

We had a great morning warm up swim, wasn't too crowded as a lot of the teams fly in on Monday instead of Sunday.  We stopped about 30 minutes into the 70 minuteish drive at olive garden where we all partook in some mass soup, salad & breadsticks.  Back on the road we had a scenic drive and made it into Austin going right to the pool.  While walking in we saw Brendan Hansen and Dave Walters.  We watched the the finishing parts of the womens workout and only the start of the mens.  The women met a lot of coaches and a few swimmers.  I was a little worried that they were getting bored, but they assured me that was not the case.

(for those who don't know I have had the privilege of working the UT swim camp 7 summers and really enjoy the UT team, campus and the City in general).

Afterwards we did a quick "tour da austin" with stops at Mellow Johnnys (Lance Armstrong's rather expensive bike shop), the Coop & Tylers, the women bought a few souvenirs ... I have a new pair of Sanuk flip flops (and Kim has a pair waiting for her too!) ... we dined at central market with UT swim camp director Jon Alter (Central Market is a made to order type of wegmans)

A supply run at Wal Mart on the way back and we are all set to go.  8:15 wake up call / 8:45am depature for a warm up swim tomorrow.  The team will have some down time in the afternoon at the Riverwalk (but I will be calling it the RiverSitDown....so they don't get their legs too tired) while I have a coaches meeting.

Should mention that our sweet van also still has the free Sirius Sat Radio so we have been rockin' out (when i say we I definitely mean the 4 girls and not me) to Sirius hits 1 and a little bit of the pulse (Channel 12) after hearing the same 20 songs for 2 days... i have yet to subject them to any talk radio.

Deep in the Heart of Texas

Travel Day was long but successful.  Started around 11amish departing Lock Haven .... lunch stop at Red Robin.  Made it to the Harrisburg Airport with about 90 minutes before departure.  Got checked in and through security and had 60 minutes to spare.  Found out the flight at our gate before us was headed to DC was canceled (brings me back to Kim and I's honeymoon ... but that's a different post for a different day).  We switched gates and boarded the plane without issue.  Relatively smooth flight all things considered (remember our monsoon?) landed in Chicago a little early, turns out too early ... we waited nearly 50 minutes for our gate to open up, and when it did we hustled up to our next gate.  We had no time so as we ran past the pizza place and a dude carrying a lot of mcdonalds we all commented on how nice food would be ...

another smooth flight without too many issues ... landed and held our breath waiting for our luggage to come through.  Success.  We boarded the overly crowded shuttle bus to the Alamo rental car ... met and overly friendly worker who pointed us in the right direction.  Terray picked the shinest of the 3 mini vans, turns out it had a mere 104 miles on it and reeked of new car smell.  We stopped a What-A-Burger ... love that place, the women had either a chicken sandwich or a burger, not too bad.  30 minutes later we found our hotel, got checked in (found out that making reservations back in September was a good thing, as our hotel - 7 miles from the pool, is booked through March 2012.

Unpacked and now fighting heavy eyelids as I finish this post.  We are doing breakfast 9amish, and heading over to the pool at 9:45am, going to check in, and get a swim in before adventure/exploration day.

with the revision, 12 more women and 1 male were added to the meet.  it also means that Britt was selected in the 100 breast individually.  it appears to be a pretty complicated process, but after all the revisions and message board posts not much changed for us.  we are still headed to Texas on the 6th of March for the National Championships with 4 swimmers and we have 4 (or 3) more individual swims than we did last season in Canton.

What a sweet, sweet session.  Started with the 200 back ... Amanda Terray had a fantastic swim, I told her later that was the best she looked swimming that event in 2 years!  She is going into the session 3rd and is pretty motivated winning the event 4 years in a row.  We will see can't wait!

100 free was next ... sarah navarro continued to surprise herself with a lifetime best.  Kristen Capretti and Jenna Brooks also swam wicked fast.  Sam was just a hair off her lifetime best, but will be leading off the relay tonight (and has the option of time trialin' too) to get her 53.

Britt swam another stellar race in the 200 breast and will be going into finals in 8th ... (.05 ahead of 9th place)  2 swims in the 200 fly ... Shannon Milstead smashed her lifetime best with a great 2:15.7.  Kristin Taylor swam with a few too many nerves and didn't have the time she was looking for, but did gain a lot of experience for next year.

Kasey was in the 3rd heat of the 1650 this morning .... and again, smashed her team record 18:07.77.

We were able to secure a few rooms until 3pm and will be heading to the pool shortly after that.  I will be losing internet access for the computer, but will be using the crackberry for sure!

As you can see from the "ticker" of posts on the blog and facebook that we had a really great night.  Lots and lots of fast swims ... can't wait until tomorrow's events.  A little too fatigued to write a run down....another early morning tomorrow with some more great swims.

I am so incredibility proud of our women ... just some great swims and positive energy all around.  The PSAC is wicked fast this year...(heard the WCU coach tell someone that the 3rd place finisher in the womens 200 im 3 years ago, does NOT even make back at night to swim....holy moly)

Sat Prelims...

Apologies for the lack of live updates during the session ... it was fast and furious today with a lot of Haven swims.

Click HERE to view the results.

Started with the 100 fly.  We had 3 lifetime bests in a matter of 2 heats!  Congrats Capretti, Taylor and Milstead!  Jenna swam a very fast "b" cut and is going into finals seeded 7th.  Sarah Navarro shocked the world with her 2:01.74 200 free.  Just awesome.  Next up was Britt's 100 breast and what a great morning swim, not a great finish, but a sweet time of 1:05.01, seeded 2nd.  Going to be a fun race to watch tonight.  Terray finished up with the 100 backstroke and was just a hair slower than leading off the relay last night but is in the big heat seeded 5th tonight.

We had a lot of family / friends / teammates as spectators today... great turnout.  For lunch I had Chick-fila with Britt that we brought over to Panera to have with team.  After giving them a poor review 2 years ago, I have to tell you that I've found the perfect sandwich for me...the spicey chicken deluxe with pepper jack cheese.  Pair that with a diet dr pepper and waffle fries and I am in deep fried food heaven.

The 100's Day (and 200 free)

Another great morning ahead of us. First event up in prelims (remember the relays are timed finals) is the 400 IM and for the first time in a long time we don't have a swimmer in the event. 100 fly is next with 3 swims, followed by the 200 free with 1 swim. The only other events are the 100 breast and back. With 1 swim in each.

Friday Finals

200 free relay had very solid swims from all 4 women ... 200 IM had Britt seeded 7th after a morning swim where she went out a little too fast.  This evening she swam smarter and went essentially the same time (.08 slower)...much stronger and efficent.

Sam didn't really have the result we were looking for, but still looked great.  went in 16th and stayed 16th.  Good news was her prelim swim was the B cut she was looking for and tonight won't be the last time she swims that event individually this season.

We finished out with a new school record in the 400 medley relay!! placed 6th (quick illustration on just how crazy fast the meet is this year our time was about 8 tenths slower last year and we placed 3rd, this year we are faster and got 6th, it is nuts that a B cut doesn't make it into the top 16 at night).

GREAT feast from Olive Garden tonight in the special room that the Hampton Inn has...time to get some shut eye, another great day of swimming tomorrow!

Prelims Report

Sorry for the late update ... we had a pretty awesome morning ... Kristin Taylor lead us off with a lifetime best in the 500 free, and Kasey Campbell had another great swim ... just a hair slower than last night's 500 split ... but ask any coach at this meet the 1000 thursday night to 500 friday morning double is not easy.  The IM saw 3 great swims by Milstead, Navarro & Rehrig ... britt broke her own school record and is seeded 7th going into tonight.  The 50 free saw Sam Durham getting her B cut with a 24.44...seeded 16th going into tonight.  Terray went a season best 24.66 and Brooks and Capretti tied with season best times of 25.18.

What a morning!  Can't wait for tonight when we add in the 200 free relay & the 400 medley relay.

Great Day 1

click HERE to read the official LHU press release.

What a wonderful night of swimming on day 1 of the PSAC meet.  As you can see if you read previous posts, we had two NCAA cut times.  Kasey reached her goal of an NCAA 'b' cut time with just a perfectly swum race.  (note: she also went out in a lifetime best in the 500 with a 5:19!)

We waited around for the rest of the 1000's (3 more heats of women, and 3 heats of men) before our 200 medley relay time trialed.  We were between Cal & Gannon.  We had 4 great legs, with Sam anchoring in a 23.60 to give us the cut!!  The funny part was that our women were just so focused on swimming fast that they didn't know what the cut time was....assuming that our time wasn't fast enough they were just happy to have swum fast.  Now, I had no reaction b/c (1) I was pleasantly surprised that we swam that fast and (2) we had worked our relay exchanges a LOT in the past week and we work on pushing them...so much so that I wouldn't have been suprised if we had a false start, so I didn't want to get too excited just in case we had one and the time would have been null and void.

(note: I had Adam Stoner standing right in the line of the exchanges so that he could grade them and he said if anything they could have been a little faster!!)

It is funny b/c I think back to last year when we got the A cut, Kutztown was right next to us and they also got the cut ... swimming, RACING, right next to another strong relay is a huge help, I like it even better when we both get the time we were looking for.  Hoping to have some great relay races when we are swimming for points!

Can't get too excited though as we are still just starting the meet and have 6 sessions to go!!

Race Day!

Race day has finally arrived ... we board our bus in just over 3 hours.  We are going to make a quick stop for lunch at an Applebees about half way.  Once we get into Mechanicsburg we will make a supply run to Wal Mart where the women (and Stoner) will be able to get a few snacks and drinks for their rooms.

We will check into the hotel and the women will have some time to relax, shave down etc before we head over to the pool.  There is a coaches meeting at 5:35pm and the 1000 starts at 6:30pm.  Kasey will be swimming in heat 1 lane 4, a great spot.  After 4 total heats of the women and 3 total heats of the men, there will be optional time trials.  We will be taking advantage of the option by swimming the 200 medley relay.

Coverage starts Thursday at 6:30pm with the women's and men's 1000 free ... hopefully they will continue the broadcast for the optional time trials after the 1000.  We will be doing the 200 medley relay (and I know for sure of 1 other team doing the same time trial ... traditionally there are multiple events swum during that session)

GO HAVEN!!

1 more practice!

I like tossing in some morning only workouts during taper time ... this morning was one of those workouts.  Women all look strong and consistent.  They will have plenty of time to rest up before tomorrow afternoon's workout.

Departure time is 10am on Thursday!!  Go Haven!
