Where Are They Now Wednesday~Rebecca (Rhoades) Carver

Name: Rebecca Carver

Years at LHU: 2003 – 2007

Degree(s) Earned: Sport Administration

Years You Swam: Freshman to Senior

Best Events: 500, 1000 and the 1650!

Most Memorable Swimming Memory: Swimming my second mile at PSACs trying to break 20 minutes. During the last 75 my dad was all upset in the stands thinking I wasn’t going to break 20 (he knows nothing about swimming) and my mom started yelling at him that I was going to break 19 minutes if I got moving. So my dad stands up and screams at the top of his lungs “SPRINT BEC!” and because there were only like 15 people in the pool area I heard him! I thought “oh man I must be going too slow!” so I sprinted, as much as you can after 1600 yards! And I broke 19 minutes, lifetime best in the 1650. And yes everyone thought my dad was crazy!

Awards Received at School: Most Outstanding Swimmer Award – 2005

Maiden Name: Rhoades

Occupation: Senior Program Director

Company: YMCA of York County

Title: Aquatic Director

Spouses Name: Kevin Carver (LHU Class of 2005)

Children: Chase, 2 years old

Anything Else You’d Like To Share With Haven Nation: I still use the workouts that Andy Waeger gave us for the Summer of 2006 when I swim…and I NEVER EVER do jumps…I would rather swim 7 1000’s during our winter training trip with bronchitis again!

All Athletics Banquet!

Monday was our all Athletics banquet for the year, and it was a great one. Very nice to see everyone from all sports together in the same room representing the Crimson and White all dressed up.

It was nice to have the 2013-2014 team together (minus just a few) one final time before Saturday's graduation. We'll miss our seniors, but it was a great way to send them off again.

Awesome team picture(s) taken by Dr. Erin Kennedy, who served as our Faculty Captain during our Kutztown meet. That meet can be read about HERE.Best photo-bomb I've ever seen!

The keynote speaker was Lee Rubin, who delivered a great message to our athletes. I am so proud to see just how far the campus community has come, and am very excited to see where we can go!

Haven Swim Clinic

A lot of great pictures from our 2 day swim clinic Saturday and Sunday April 26th and 27th. Very proud of our team interacting with the community, and I believe the swimmers got some exciting first hand tips from our great athletes! Our team seemed to have as much fun as the youth swimmers, and we look forward to doing it again in the near future!

Final Practice of Spring Training!

We've done some great things this off season. I am very proud with how committed our team has been to fitness in and out of the water, as well as working on fine tuning their underwaters. Our final practice consisted of Ultimate Frisbee, (shout out to the team of Abby Miller, Allie Muha, Carley Nitchie, and Emily Shultz for going unbeaten!) with a lot of moving with a purpose.

Afterward we swam the rectangle (pictured above) for a few minutes to warm up and finished up the season with two games. One involved diving in and working underwaters to the opposite side and getting out. Last one out was eliminated. Our final 2 were Nicole Martellotti and Jamie Mason, with Jamie winning the underwater championship in the end.

Then we finished up with a huge team favorite....BASEBALL! The game was cut short (nearly 2 full innings) by the ball ending up in the ceiling, quite a shot.

This team has worked hard, and we're excited to welcome some great new members next season! GO HAVEN!

Haven Swimming Families Reunited!

Last week saw the Haven Club Lacrosse Team take on Slippery Rock in their region championship. The Durham and Campbell families were present to watch their children take part in another sporting event, but this time as opponents. Though SRU prevailed in the end, there was still a lot of Haven (Swimming) pride to be seen!

100,000 Visits and 1,000 Posts Throwback Treat

To celebrate our team blog reaching 1,000 posts (this post is the 1,000 post) and receiving over 100,000 views, this gem was found in my office and I figured there was no better time to share this "Throwback Thursday". Lock Haven State College Men's records--Last one posted in 1975, there are some great names on that list, and it is my pleasure to share with the LHU Swimming community!

Amanda Thomas Scotland Update!

Haven Swimming Sophomore Amanda Thomas is taking part in a very fun semester abroad in Scotland. Below is the update she recently emailed me to share with all of our loyal readers! We'd like to wish Amanda a Happy Birthday, and safe travels as her time winds down in Scotland and she makes her way back to The States and back to The Haven. Have fun Amanda and thanks for sharing!
_____________________________________________________________

So it basically rains everyday. Either poring, drizzle, or spittle, there's always water in the air. If it isn't water, it's hail. Those days are super fun. The weather can go from cloudy to sunny with blue skies to dark clouds with rain to sunny again to a hail storm in 15 minutes. You never know what the weather will be like. I left for class without a jacket or a hood because it was so sunny and warm. An hour later? I left class and it was poring and windy as ever. Don't trust Scottish weather! Even the weather reports are wrong.

I think I can't count on one hand how many days we've had with no rain. And those days were amazing!

But other than the weather, it's been amazing and fun! I've made friends from all around the world and they're so great! I'm really loving it here and loving the people I'm meeting!

Every Saturday we go to a different area of Scotland so I'm really getting to see the entire country and it's great. It's so beautiful here and when the sun comes out it's even better! Although I'm so used to not seeing the sun that when it does come out it's usually too bright for me to handle!

Classes are a lot different here but I'm managing while also having a great time and seeing all of these cool places. I've been to Amsterdam already and am planning trips to Ireland, Italy, and Germany....maybe a few more too! I already booked a flight to Greece and my family is coming to travel with me at the end to see London and Paris! I'm so excited!

I'm attaching a few of my favorite pictures!

Can't wait to be back at the Haven!

Inaugural Haven Swimming Swim-a-Thon

We would like to invite the LHU and Lock Haven community to join us on April 5th for a Swim-A-Thon fundraiser from 10am-Noon.  Help us promote the lifelong benefits of the great sport of swimming! This event is for ALL ages!

How it works…

Participants secure pledges from family, friends, and acquaintances either as a per-length donation or a flat donation prior to the April 5th swim.

Participants show up on April 5th and have 2 hours to complete as many lengths as possible. Swimmers may take breaks when necessary but will only have 2 hours to complete the swim.

Special Haven Swimming prizes will be given throughout the morning. (Youngest participant, oldest participant, most laps swum male, most laps swum female, and MUCH MORE…)

If you swim 100 lengths of the pool (50 for swimmers 10 and under) during the Swim-a-Thon you will receive a FREE Haven Swimming t-shirt (adult sizes S-XXL).

Official Flyer can be viewed HERE. Pledge form can be viewed HERE.

Donations made to LHUF Swimming are tax deductible!

Competitive Swim Clinic
Saturday April 26th and Sunday April 27th 2014

This 2 day clinic will cover all four competitive strokes. Athletes will be broken into three groups and have the opportunity to work in a small group setting with coaches, athletes, and volunteers of Haven Swimming in Zimmerli pool on the campus of Lock Haven University.

The cost of this 2 day clinic is just $15 per swimmer pre-registration. (One payment covers both days!) Day of event registration will be $20.

More information and sign up forms can be found HERE.

6th Annual "Havens Got Talent" Show

Truth be told...I'm biased. I ALWAYS think our team should win the talent show, and this year was one of their better acts. The team had a race to put on their racing suits. (Everyone in the swimming world knows just how long this can take, but since the racing suits were older and the swimmers had 3 helpers the race was on!) To be declared the winner, the swimmer needed the suit, cap, and goggles. Alex Watson did a fantastic job for us announcing!

The winner gets to be the pride of the athletic department for the next year, a medal, AND a Space Jam DVD. It was a great way for the teams to come together and raise some funds for charity. Below are a few photos from the night.

Last night at the halftime of the women's basketball game our athletes that achieved a 3.25 or higher GPA in the Fall 2013 semester were honored. We had 7 swimmers represented in this ceremony, a great showing by our team academically!

Final Session 2014

For the final session of the 2014 PSAC meet we had just one relay to swim, the 400 Free Relay. Relay, as well as the PSAC senior ceremony. There were a LOT of seniors this year, and we would certainly like to wish all seniors the best of luck of their future endeavors.

Again, special shout out to our 5 swimmers from the class of 2014.
