Class of 2013 Graduation

It was a GREAT day on Saturday for graduation! We were thankful that the weather held off for a wonderful outside graduation ceremony. Our four graduating seniors said Goodbye (for now) to the Haven in style. After the ceremony, the four seniors and their families came together at the pool for one final set of pictures in a place that they have spent a lot of their college careers at!

We’d like to give a shoutout to our seniors one last time, and welcome them for the first time as Haven Swimming Alumni! Thanks again Ladies and Stoner. Your impact on the program goes way beyond the four years that you spend here, and we are lucky to have you all as a part of our history!

So take a look one more time at the profile of our Haven Graduates. Thanks again ladies!

Annual Haven Athletics Picnic

Finals are just finishing up, and I would like to recap the annual Haven Athletic Department picnic that took place last week.

Senior Britt Rehrig was presented with two major awards on the night.

With a GPA of 3.992, she was awarded the Senior Female Scholar Athlete amongst all sports. That is an amazing honor, and she is pictured with the other Scholar Athletes. Haven Athletics is not just about what goes on in the pool/field/track/court, its in the classroom too.

The second award was the Haven Athletics Coaches Award (as voted on by all coaches). This is not an easy award to win, and it was great to see Britt take it! She has made her mark on our program and school. We are incredibly proud to see any athlete get hardware at a banquet, and the fact that it is for performance AND academics.

Great job to ALL Haven Athletes, and Congratulations again Britt! GO HAVEN

Haven Athletes Serving the Community--Shadow Program

On Saturday, April 27th several 5th graders from local schools had the opportunity to hang out with Haven Athletes as part of the newly started Shadow program.

Athletes were from all sports on campus (except the ones competing that day) and they were able to see all facilities used by Haven teams, find out what a normal day in the life of an athlete is, and of course, find out what everyone's favorite pizza is.

Our representatives for Haven Swimming were Amanda Thomas (she's blog popular this week) and Laura Stephens. They did a great job representing Haven Swimming and as you can see above, they all got to hang out with Talon the Haven mascot. Pretty productive Saturday morning!

Wednesday was the 7th Annual Lock Haven University Celebration of Scholarship!

Here we have two athletes that are on the opposite end of their academic studies. Amanda Thomas (above) is a Freshmen taking part in the celebration for the first time, while Senior Britt Maguire (below) is showing off her capstone project and will graduate next month.

Britt Rehrig Selected for PSAC Winter Top Ten Award for Second Time

Britt Rehrig has been selected for the second time for the PSAC Winter Top Ten Award.

Description of the award from the GoLHU website:

The Top Ten Awards, selected by the PSAC's sports information directors, recognize student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom, as well as in the arena of competition. The conference designates Top Ten Award winners after each of the sports seasons: fall, winter and spring.

To be a candidate for the Top Ten Awards, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (as of Fall 2009 awards) and must be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.

Spring Training is Underway!

Great first workout for the women just getting back into it after a few week layoff. We re-started the semi famous "bottom arm" rule where if you pull with your top arm on a breakout you've earned the team 2 pushups....pretty effective if I do say so myself!

It's All In The Finish!

Great final swim of Britt's career with a 41st place finish (she was seeded 41st) and a 52.61, second all time only to her PSAC relay lead off of 52.48 three weeks ago.

LHU finished the weekend tied for 30th place (with Shippensburg). We finished 4th amongst PSAC schools at the meet.

Cant go to the south without a trip to eat some BBQ, and Full Moon BBQ was some of the best I've ever had. Britt's parents agreed, and Britt had her first swimming retirement meal that featured a Dr. Pepper and a piece of pie.

We made our way over to the senior celebration (pictures below) and over to watch the finals of Track and Field (in between swimming finals). Brittany Whitmer had some great jumps and finished well above her seed, and Alex Monroe had a school record performance in his 3k, taking 6th overall and finishing All American. Great to see and we were proud to be there! GO HAVEN

Closing Ceremonies were just like everything else at the meet: first class. Division II Festival is an idea that once every 4 years the national meet is bigger and better than ever, and I can truly say that the NCAA did a great job on planning out the details. Britt couldnt have had a better national meet to finish out on, and it was great to see her enjoy herself out of the water and do a great job in it too!

Britt finishes as an athlete that has many accolades in and out of the water for our program, as seen HERE. She's got a lot to be proud of with her time here at LHU, and LHU is certainly proud of her too. Great finish to a great national meet!

Britt Rehrig- 100 Breast All American

Great day yesterday!

Prelims: Britt took the swim out in a 29.86 and brought it home in 34.21 for a 1:04.07. The goal for Britt was simple: Get into the top 8 to get on the podium at night. The competition was tight, and she ended up finishing prelims with a season best (and just off her lifetime best). When Britt was a freshmen, the 8th time going into the night swim was a 1:05.06, this year to get into the top 16 you needed a 1:04.47. This meet has gotten FAST, so sliding into the top 8 is an even more impressive accomplishment!

Lunch was another trip to Subway, and another Chicken Bacon Ranch for me!

Finals: Britt went out in a 29.94 and came back in 34.22 for a 1:04.16, adding a tiny bit of time, but still a fast swim and an NCAA Division II All American performance!

At the end of the night we are tied with Ship for 28th. Not too bad!
Dinner was a trip to Chilis, (Ribs, as per Bill's suggestion!) and just like all week we've been lucky enough to beat the crowd. Shortly after we got our table there were no less than 40 people waiting.

Trip to Outback and Track Meet

Delish trip to Outback Steakhouse tonight with one notable happening:

They gave Britt two baked potatoes...

Some bonus pictures of Mark Manno throwing. Continued good luck to Haven Track as they go after it tomorrow and Saturday! I'm glad our teams are here to support one another!

Thursday--Off Day

We are off today, so that gave us a chance to explore Birmingham! Britt started the day with a swim at the Crossplex after the morning prelims were complete. She had a lane all to herself and could really focus on turns and finishes and get ready for tomorrow morning's swim!

After a yummy lunch at the Subway that is directly connected to our hotel we made our way over to the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and Museum that was directly across the street from where we are staying. Britt, Suzanne, Bill and myself had the pleasure to have a tour of the Museum from the Facility Director Bill Miller,  a Pennsylvania native and former LHU Athletics employee! (Its a small world). We really had a great time and I can honestly say that just like everything has been in Birmingham, the museum was first class. We took a picture with Bill in front of the exhibit of Rowdy Gaines, former Auburn swimmer and Olympian.

It was a great afternoon, and we'd like to thank Bill again for taking his time to take us through the facility!

Tonight we are on our way back to the Crossplex to see Mark Manno throw and support Haven Nation! Then dinner and a relaxing night getting ready for Britt's swim tomorrow! Lets Go HAVEN!

Wednesday--Competition Begins!

Britt got things going with a pretty solid swim in the 50 Free, tying her time from last year in prelims (24.07), nice stuff and she looks/feels ready for the rest of this week, so we're hoping for some big things!

Afterward, Britt, her parents, and myself enjoyed some Applebees and some more southern hospitality! As noted before, people down here are just as polite as can be and its made for a great environment this week!

Britt went to her parents hotel and did some sight seeing, and I spent some quality time at the hotel. We went back to the pool to watch finals and cheer on the PSAC! Britt feels good in this pool, and it looks like a lot of other swimmers do too. It has buffer lanes in the outside (10 lane pool set up as an 8 lane pool) so the waves aren't splashing back. It just goes to show that if you make it back and get a lane, you've got a chance!

We went to a personal favorite Chuys (Tex Mex) for dinner. Props to Mike Kerr of U of Indy for letting us know there is one here. Chuys is a frequented stop from the days of working Longhorns Swim Camp in Austin, Texas and I was glad to see Britt enjoyed it as well!

Britt is off on Thursday. We're going to go get a swim in at noon at the Crossplex (shooting to get her in there when a lot of people are not so she can work on turns and finishes.) and is back in action at 10am (11am Lock Haven time) tomorrow! Later on tonight we will see Haven Track kick it off with Mark Manno throwing! Going to be a good day off! GO HAVEN
