it is finals week
pretty quiet week here at the haven ... during finals week we have 2 practice options a day (a morning and afternoon) and ask the team to make it to 1 of them if there schedule allows for it.
We finish up the week on Friday after everyone is done finals with a pretty detailed team meeting followed by a dryland session and water workout...then 15 days at home before we head to Cocoa Beach Florida.

Pretty decent night of swimming for us...very happy with the efforts from top the bottom. This is a very fast pool and I am hoping to have some more repeat performances, if not even better, tomorrow. I will have to update y'all via the cell phone, but please click on the above link to see the actual results.
Special note was our 2nd place 200 free relay, with Sam Durham leading off in an all time top 5 performance, just missing a NCAA 'b' cut by .02. Kasey Campbell and Kristin Taylor placed 4th / 5th in the 500 with some really great swims. The 200 IM saw some new faces giving it a shot....with Terray, Durham placing 8th and 9th both coming close to the PSAC cut time. Rehrig placing 2nd in the 50 free with a NCAA'b' cut time of 24.46.
The 400 medley relay placed first breaking their very own invitational record (from last year) with a 3:57.58.
On a side note it is apparently extremely hilarious when an individual (myself) is trying to eat a fruit smiley fruit snack by tossing the horrible yellow flavor into the mouth, missing the mouth, hitting a lip with it falling onto the ground ... ask Nicole Faulstick, she will tell you all about the hilariousness.

Spectacular night of swimming for us. Our 200 medley relay finished 2nd in a great race to Cal U, with a NCAA 'b' cut!
Shannon Milstead dropped 6 awesome seconds in the 400im from her prelims swim. Britt Rehrig swam a NCAA 'b' cut in the 100 fly prelims, scratching finals to focus on the 100 breast ... Jenna Brooks swam to a 4th place finish with a time that was a little slower than her prelim swim. Sam Durham improved her PSAC cut time in the 100 fly to a 1:01...Kristin Taylor and Gwen Buss both dropped some time in finals of the 100 fly as well.
The 200 free was another great event for us ... Sam Durham just missed breaking 2:00 in the 200, (although my stopwatch had a 1:59.99 - legit). Kristen Capretti the 18th seed, won her heat from lane 6, dropping over 3 seconds. Kristen Taylor also dropped a little time!
All 6 of our 100 breaststrokers made it back! All swam great races! Very impressive. Highlighted by Britt Rehrig's 1:04.9. Good enough to break the meet record and a NCAA "B" cut!
Amanda Terray and Sara Daversa swam the 100 backstrokes. With Amanda winning the event with a solid B cut time. Our 800 free relay all had some great splits!
Really looking forward to tomorrow's session!!

Thursday Finals
results can be found HERE
We started off the night with a very respectable 200 free relay placing 2nd ... our time broke the previous meet record from 2002, but we were bested by CAL who won the event. We split up the B - E relays giving some of our "sprinters" the opportunity to lead off the relays to get another shot at a flat start.
The 500 free style had 2 LHU swimmers, Kasey Cambell and Kristin Taylor. Both were in Lane 6 right in front of us and swam very similar races to their prelim swims, just a hair slower. The 200 IM was goo event for us with Kaitlyn Druby swimming the bonus heat again just a hair slower than her prelim swim. The final heat at 2 LHU swimmers, Sarah Navarro and Britt Rehrig. Sarah didn't have the swim that she did in the morning and placed 6th ... Britt had a fantastic race and dropped her time some more. Another "B" cut and all time top 5 performance.
We had 5 swimmers make it back in the 50 free ... but Britt scratched the final so that she could get a little extra rest. So we had Amanda Terray and Jenna Brooks just missing PSAC cuts ... freshman, Kristen Capretti making her first ever PSAC cut and Sam Durham swimming a lifetime best over in lane 1, and placing herself on the all time top 5 list in the event.
We finished the night with the 400 medley relay ... and we had some really great swims across the board (we entered 5 relays). Our A relay placed 2nd ... the same 4some was about 4 seconds faster this year than last.
We had a feast at Ruby Tuesday (to go) and I went on another supply run to wal mart for some additional breakfast items and juices (i got myself a dew...sorry kim :-) ) ... went on my run and now I am blogging the days events.
Tomorrow should be a great day for us ... 100's of stroke and the 200 free. Really looking forward to another day of swimming fast and kicking some A money money.

What a spectacular morning of swimming! Out of 29 swims this morning all but 3 were season best times ... with a good number of them being lifetime best swims. PRETTY AWESOME.
Swims of note include Britt Rehrig's 200IM (ncaa "b" cut) - 2:11.22, which is also good enough for 2nd on our all time top 5 list. Sarah Navarro's PSAC qualifying time in the 200 IM - 2:16.41. Sam Durham's PSAC cut time of 24.89, also a lifetime best swim.
We had the worlds longest trip to Subway followed by some quality rest and relaxation. Headed into finals adding in the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay.

Long story short ... Hampton Inn didn't receive the contract I mailed back or either of the 2 faxes I sent, so with a little luck we are back at our old stomping ground (super 8) with Coach Pat and the Fairmont State Falcons. That is all I am going to type about that.

Big win against ESU
We had a great meet versus ESU. That started off with a moment of silence in remembrance of Fran Crippen (click HERE to learn more about Fran).
Our team really wanted the W and showed it from the get go having come up a few points shy in last year's dual meet.
First event was the 200 medley relay ... we went 1-3 just missing the pool record set by the same foursome (terray, rehrig, brooks, durham) 2 weeks ago.
Next up was the 1000 ... going 1-2 with commanding performances by Kasey Campbell and Kristin Taylor. Sam Kaleck swam it for the first time ever and did very well. Sam Durham won the 200 free in a PSAC qualifying time. Amanda Terray won the 100 back also with a PSAC cut time.
Britt Rehrig won the 100 breast with a NCAA "b" cut time and new Zimmerli pool record.
Event 6 (200 fly) was the first event we didn't win, but we rebounded well with a Capretti, Terray & Brooks...1-2-3 finish in the 50 free, followed by a Durham, Capretti 1-2 finish in the 100 free. The 200 backstroke was another event we didn't win, but the 3-4-5 finish helped with keep the meet in check.
Britt Rehrig won the 200 breast in a PSAC cut time with great swims from Sarah Navarro and Kaityln Druby. The 500 free was up next and ended up being another event we didn't win, but Campbell, Milstead and Kinard swam very well. Jenna Brooks had a great come from behind win the 100 fly. Sam Durham and Kristin Taylor had a great 3-4 finish. Britt Rehrig won her 4th event of the day in the 200 im.
The 200 free relay ended the meet, with our women going 2-3-5.
Final score was LHU 159 / ESU 103

Quad Meet Night 1
What a great first night of swimming for us. After a rather tough week of training the women were very much ready to race. All decked out in our new sweats and through back warm ups our women raced exceptionally well. There was a full set of bleachers and a concession stand.
Today we have an 8:30am wake up swim ... after which the women will have breakfast OYO (on your own) and will be reporting back about 10:45am. We are set for a noon start and I couldn't be more excited for day 2 of racing!

Crimson v. White
What a great day for racing!!
We had a short order of events ... 200 med relay, 500 free, 50 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 free, 200 im, 200 free relay.
The Crimson team dominated early by setting a meet record in the 200 medley (Daversa, Rehrig, Buss & Taylor - 1:57.11) and going 1-2-3 in the 500. Britt Rehrig (team crimson) also won the 50 free in a new meet record and PSAC qualifying time of 24.87. (Sam Durham of the white team was 2nd also under the old record with a time of 25.48).
Jenna Brooks (team white) and Kristin Taylor (team crimson) both were under the old 100 fly record with a 1:03.07 and 1:03.80. Sara Daversa won the 100 backstroke just ahead of Kristen Capretti (team white). Britt Rehrig broke her own record in the 100 breast with 1:08.68, also good enough for an unofficial PSAC qualifying time.
The 7th event had Sam Durham break the 100 free record with a 57.07. Shannon Milstead won the 200IM with a time of 2:27.78. Alum Amanda Palmer swam this event and broke the old record with a time of 2:20.84 ... she now holds the distinction of holding the meet record (2:26.05) and the alum record!!
The White team battled all day picking up a lot of the depth points and after earning the 6 points for the relay win with a new meet record (Terray, Brooks, Capretti & Durham - 1:42.74) (note the crimson team was also under the old record earning 2 points - Buss, Williams, Taylor & Rehrig) ... to finish the meet with a 64 - 64 tie.
Big props go to Shannon "Dubby" Wilbur - Alum and Adam Stoner - Future Alum for their team dividing skills.
We open the regular season next weekend hosting Cal, Kutztown and E. Stroudsburg in the first ever Haven Quad Invitational.

Thursday pm / Friday am
Last night had a great first half of a workout and followed it up with a great swim/dryland set.
We did a dirty dozen minus 2. Which is swimming the width of the pool underwater ...the first time across we do 1 press out ... 1 push up ... 1 sit up, the second time across we do 2 press outs ... 2 push ups ... 2 sit ups etc getting up to 10 press outs ... 10 pushups ... 10 situps.
Everybody on the team had a partner. When their partner was doing the dirty dozen minus 2, they were in the shallow end doing an AO kick with a board and double the number drag jumps (so when their partner was doing sets of 1, they had 2 DJ's. When their partner was doing sets of 2, they had 4 DJ's etc getting up to 20 DJ's)

This morning we did an hour of swimming and then an hour of power. Which is simply an hour in the pool without touching the bottom or the sides of the pool, doing various activities with medicine balls, jugs and vertical kicking. We did the first 30 minutes with shoes on.

Almost Phase 2
I like to break down our season into different phases for a few different reasons. Primarily to keep myself focused and to keep the team "in the loop" with how we're progressing through the season.
Phase 1 is basically 3 weeks of getting into shape. Phase 2 is about 5 1/2 weeks of pretty intense training, with us being in the weight room twice a week and a dryland workout another morning. Afternoon workouts everyday and a Saturday practice or swim meet.
Phase 3 is a mini-taper for the IUP invite and most likely the Grove City College invite. Phase 4 is Winter training, which includes our annual trip to Cocoa Beach, Florida. Phase 5 starts the taper for the non-PSAC qualifiers and more hard workouts for the PSAC qualifiers. Phase 6 is PSAC taper. Phase 7 is NCAA taper. Phase 8 is spring training which is different every year.
Monday will start Phase 2 and I am really looking forward to the increase of intensity and the breaking up into different training groups!

We like to Kick
We are a kicking team ... simply put "the best kickers with the races". (that's a Eddie Reese quote, but I am sure that all the best coaches say that) so in our 2nd water workout we did the following sets:
12 x
(50 im order @ 1:00 great strokes
(2 x 25 @ :40 AO flutter kick with board
and our 2nd set was
8 x
(100 - odd BE 3/5 @ 1:45 / 1:30 even were BE 3 @ 1:30/1:15
(4 x 25 @ :40 AO flutter kick with board
good stuff. For our early morning dryland we LOVE do to lunges in all directions (on top of plenty of other leg exercises!)
