Session 4

click HERE to view the final results

We started off the session with some great 200 medley relay swims ... our A relay was neck and neck with CAL u, just coming up short, but securing a NCAA 'b' cut!!  Smokin' fast! Erin & Allie swam great 400 IM's with Erin dropping some serious time.

Britt Rehrig would have been the top seed in the 100 fly after prelims, but scratched to focus on the 100 breast.  Our other flyers, Durham & Taylor dropped a little bit of time while Mutschler & Druby added just a few tenths.

200 free wasn't a great final night in terms of time drops ... we added just a few tenths on each, but was not disappointed with the effort!

the breaststroke continues to be a very strong event for us ... with 5 second swims.  All of them were right on their morning times.  Britt Rehrig swam her 2nd fastest ever with a time that would have qualified her for NCAA's last year.

backstroke had just 2 finalists with Carley dropped a few tenths from her morning swim and Kayla adding just a little bit.  The 800 free relay lead off with Abby giving it another run at the PSAC cut time.  Almost got it ...

Tomorrow is another great day of racing ... 2 sessions that usually run pretty quick.  100 free, 200 back, breast and fly ... along with the 1650 (not in that order).  We are going to toss in a few time trials with some people who had some academic conflicts tomorrow.

Team dinner was a Romeo's take out ... GREAT food, but horrible service and our order wasn't quite ready on time (in fact we waited an extra 25 minutes!)  Tomorrow's lunch is the world famous (in Indiana, PA) 6th street deli, where they feature 2 foot long subs.

We also continue to have the most supportive, largest group of, parents in the stands ... although, they don't enjoy the long waits for the blog updates, they do a great job cheering on our women.

Finally, special shout out to our Asst AD, Danielle Barney, who took in this morning's swim session while taking a little break from watching our volleyball team compete in the NCAA regional championships.

Session 3

today's session was a really great one ... a LOT of second swims, which is always our goal.  Quick run down will be ...

  • 1 of the 2 - 400 IM's were season best times with both Erin and Allie swimming again tonight.
  • 7 of the 8 - 100 fly's were season best times (with Erin's being a little slower, and although I am not one for excuses, the 400 im / 100 fly back to back event isn't always an easy one)
  • 12 of 12 in the 200 free were season bests
  • 5 of the 6 in the 100 breast were season bests
  • 3 of the 5 in the 100 back were season bests
time to take a shower/nap and then  head back to the pool for session 4 ... big night for us!

Just Remembered...

On the way back from Wal Mart with grocery breakfast items I remembered I failed to mention in the previous post that Kayla Schnars lead off the 400 medley relay with an all time top 5 time ... 1:01.72

finals day 1

Sorry, delay in posting ... #1 swim fan (and asst coach kim) came to town and we took awhile to get him settled after the Ruby Tuesdays take out dinner.

Started off with a few great swims in the 200 free relay.  With only the A relay scoring points, we lead off the B, C, & D relays with sprinters to give them another shot at a flat start time.

Kasey Blesh took her maiden name off the all time top 5 times list with her 500 swim tonight ... 5:18.40, keeping the 2nd place spot placing 14th, with a 7 second time drop from her prelim swim.

Britt Rehrig took the gold medal in the 200 im with a new school record, NCAA b cut time of 2:08.63.  Sarah Navarro placed 4th just missing her lifetime best.  Shannon Milstead placed 11th with a 2:20.93.  Erin Kury dropped a solid 2 seconds with her IM, moving up a few spots from her seed spot.  Emilee Mallams placed 17th after squeaking into the night swim.

In the 50 free, Rehrig placed 3rd shortly after winning the 200 im.  Kristen Capretti, placed 6th adding a tenth from her prelim swim ... still her 2nd best ever swim!  Carley Nitchie dropped a little time, but came up .10 short of the PSAC qualifying time.  Vagnoni & Schnars also swam respectable final races.

In the 400 medley relay saw some great performances...many of them warm up swims leading up to the 100 stroke races tomorrow.

click HERE for the prelim results

"no pressure but i'm waiting"

Here is the quick run down!
  • 6 - 500's, and 5 were season best times!  Kasey is swimming again tonight!
  • 7 - 200 im's, and ALL 7 were season best times!  6 of the 7 are swimming again tonight!
  • 15 - 50 free's, 13 of them were season best times.  5 will be swimming again tonight.
Lots of second swims ... TEAM HAVEN!

Kristen Capretti punched her ticket to PSAC's with a lifetime best swim of 24.79.  Britt Rehrig, improved her 200 IM time by a second, just missing a B cut by .2.

What a spectacular start!  Tonight we add in the 200 free relay and finish up with the 400 medley relay.  Should have a few more minutes this evening to provide live updates via facebook & twitter!

We had a pretty decent lunch today, giving the option of Subway (which most of the team took part in) or an Italian joint ... that had a decent variety, but the slice of pizza I had get's a D +.

Just enough time now for a quick shower before heading back to the pool.

Race Day 1

Didn't get a chance to give an update last night. After check in Adam and I went to wal mart to get our breakfast items then did a quick check in on everyone before kicking up and relaxing myself.

Day 1 prelims has just 3 events, 500 free, 200 im, and 50 free. Should go pretty fast and we are looking for a great start to the 3 day swim meet!!

Stay tuned ... Updates throughout the morning!

IUP Invite

The IUP Invite (recently renamed to the Pidgeon Invite) is upon us ... one of my favorite meets of the year!  We depart the Haven tomorrow evening and will be racing in 6 sessions, over 3 days.   This is basically our trial run for the PSAC & NCAA championship competitions.  Each one of the women is permitted to swim up to 5 individual events with no limit on relays.  (slightly  more liberal than the max permitted at PSAC & NCAA).

We have rested a little bit for the meet and I am expecting some great races!

Stay tuned for updates.

Last night the women dined out to support a good cause ... $2 dollar tacos at Caso de Lobo with $1 from each taco going to a co-worker's of one of our most loyal swim lesson participants...they have a 6 month old daughter who has a long road ahead of her!

After taco's there was the annual SAAC date auction ... Word on the street is the swim team generated the most money!

Halloween Practice 2011

Record breaking again this year.  Each year seems like I 'invest' more and more in what might be one of the more fun 'workouts' of the season.  This year a shade under 100 bones was spent on the treats...(don't worry parents, there were some apples in there too).  Recently we started having our special practice the day after halloween b/c the candy get's marked down to 50% off at wal mart the day after thanksgiving...and when pinching pennies, this is the best deal around! (so yeah, the 100 bucks was at the 50% rate)

The concept is simple.  Draw a slip of paper from the bowl, where there could be anything ... the team favorite is 'candy' ... this is where the team his the 'pumpkin'(aka gatorade jug) for their candy.  There are also such mini sets, such as a 200 im or a few 25's AO from a dive.  Some of the more recent favorites include "pick 4 people to do a 100 fly with you, everyone else Candy!" ... or "pick 5 people to do a 100 fly, not including yourself and you can't pick yourself, to do a 100 fly, everyone else Candy!"  .... I picked up on that one by watching Survior.  There is also the Square butterfly ... (fyi: no lane lines for halloween practice) where the team swims length / width / length / width of the pool butterfly ...

Then there is the Apple Bob ... of course we don't put in the same number of apples as women on the team.  We put a few less in ... if you make it back to the shallow end wall with an apple you can enjoy your apple while those who didn't make it back with an apple enjoy some butterfly swimming.

Then the all time favorite ... belly flop contest.  Most of the team usually "opt out" but there are few brave souls.

This is a great reward practice for all the hard work the women have been putting into the season so far...we are back at it tomorrow before 6am!  No time to rest!  Go Haven.
