totals...final night!
7 new team records...
8 new all time top 5 performances...
5 all american honors...
What a great week of swimming...I couldn't be prouder of our 4 all american swimmers!!
We ended up tied for 16th in the nation!!!
I have to say that our university should be very proud of everything we have done...the fact that we (LHU) hosted the NCAA II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships 4 hours away from campus is just awesome...
Special thank you to all the volunteers that helped us with the meet ... and there were certainly a LOT of volunteer hours.
We plan on getting an early start tomorrow morning to get back to the haven ... it sure will be nice to sleep in my own bed AND watch TV where I know what the channels are!

last morning ...
just 2 swims for us this morning...Amanda's 200 back and the 400 free relay. Amanda took it out very strong, but faded towards the end. Didn't have the result we would've hoped for BUT she has another shot to swim it tonight ... always good to have 2nd swims!
400 free relay lead off with Sam going a lifetime best and improving her standing on the all time top 5 list...Terray busted out a 52.3 ... Jenna went another smokin' fast time of 53.91 and Britt brougth it home in a 53.26. The final time was a 3:33.64 ... breaking out old team record from 2006 by 3.3 seconds!!
Last session tonight!! We are in 15th place right now ... we will move down a little bit with only 1 swim tonight, but should still end up in the top 20.

5th & 7th
Tonight was a special night for us ... as seen above by the Bob McCool pictures Britt placed 7th in her 100 breaststroke and Amanda placed 5th in the 100 backstroke. Time wise we were just a little bit slower than the morning swims (swim offs included) ... but the racing part was good.
We just had a delish take out meal from Olive Garden and now it is time to rest up ... tomorrow we have Amanda's 200 back & our last relay ... 400 free.
Sam is going to lead us off so she will have a legit flat start 100 free time ... then we are going to go with Terray, Brooks & Rehrig ... this is the only relay record we haven't broken this year, so we are going to give it a run!!
GO HAVEN!!
PS - current record is 3:37.31 from 2006
PPS - we set a goal of being a top 20 team in the points by the end of the meet ... right now we are 15th.
what a (friday) morning!!
10 total heats of mens and womens 500 freestyle made for a little more waiting around than we probably would have liked. Amanda's 100 back was the first LHU swim of the day. She had a great start and equally as great first turn ... got stuck a little on the wall on the 2nd turn, but rebounded nicely to finish up tied for 4th going into finals. She went a 56.69 ... another school record/lifetime best.
Britt's 100 breast was the next event ... she was set up in lane 1 ... cutting to the chase (b/c i need a little nap) she tied the swimmer in lane 2 ... and they actually ended up tied for 8th ... SWIM OFF ... we decided to stick with going after the 800 free relay ... I gave Britt the option to swim it to swim it, or swim it to go after a best time ... she didn't even hesitate when I asked and said she was going to go for it to pursue a best time.
She lead off with an all time top 5 swim of 1:59.6 ... amanda was the next one in the water, took it out like a maniac and was hurting a little towards the end, but had a respectable 159 split...sam was next and rocked a 159 as well ... jenna (straight sprinter) brooks brought it home with a 2:01 ... just a really great effort by the ladies.
Right after the relay, Britt is assured no less than 30 minutes rest from her last swim before the swim off can take place. After all the heats of the relays there was about 5 minutes before the swim off. Britt was swimming against a sophmore from UC - San Diego ... one of the largest and most spirited teams at NCAAs, they really get behind their teammates ... during the 5 minutes the UC swimmers were starting to assemble behind lane 4 ... our 3 other qualifers and teammates who are volunteering along with a large number of our sports admin volunteers were right next to them at the end of lane 5 ... both groups were chanting and supporting their swimmer. I couldn't help but to smile and think just how special the moment was ... just gives me goosebumps (a common occurance this week!).
Behind the block Britt looked calm, but excited (in the bleachers her mom on the other hand...not so calm, but equally as excited) ... at the first 50 she was just a little slower than the morning swim (UC swimmer was faster for her split) ... at the 3rd 75 they were .03 seconds apart....place was going nuts ... right after the pull out both swimmers looked long and strong, Britt started to inch ahead with about 10 yards to go ... and when she hit the wall Britt was 1:04.48 ... a mere .11 faster than the UC swimmer. Just an awesome race....Britt will now be seeded 8th going into finals and upon a succesful completion of the race will be an All-American.

200 free relay
after a slight delay on a un-confirmed false start, Britt lead us off with a lifetime best ... 24.4, Jenna was a solid 24.2, Sam was a 24.1 and Terray brought us home in a 23.6. We ended up just a little bit slower than the prelim swim, which is okay...ended up 14th and a HM All-American!
This morning is the 100 back / 100 breast & 800 free relay.

PS
just thinking a little more about our performances and perhaps why the dq doesn't really bother me that much ... before our season started our 200 medley relay record was 1:50ish ... last night we went 1:43 and got 3rd in the nation. Only losing to the first and second team in the country (from last year ... and perhaps again this year).
in the 400 medley relay our record was 4:01ish ... this morning we went 3:50...with a dq, but take away the negative .02 second from the false start .. and we still are a 3:50 relay ... just pretty cool stuff that these women have accomplished this year ... can't wait to see what they have in store for me for the rest of the weekend!!
GO HAVEN!!
PS - just confirmed pre 09-10 records in the relay ... 4:01.2 & 1:50.0

rest of day 2 prelims
After our relay, we had some downtime while the 400 im's took place. Then Jenna's 100 fly was up...as previously menitoned before Jenna went a 58 at PSAC's before going 59 ... well, she smashed her lifetime best (again!) from lane 1 with a 57.43 ... awesome, didn't quite make it back into finals, but we were all really pumped about the swim.
Our 400 medley relay was really great...Terray went a 56.8 (2nd fastest ever...3rd fastest of all backstrokers), Britt went 1:04.2, Jenna split a 56.6 and Sam went a 52.7 ... but turns out sam left -.02 early and our time didn't stand ... just one of those things. We spent a lot of time working on the relay exchanges leading up to PSAC's and NCAA's ... we had to be moderatly agressive in our effort to make it into the top 8 (if our time stood we would have ended up 9th) ... althought that relay was dq'd I really am proud of the way the team took it ... in stride. When these things happen it is all about how an individual handles it and moves forward. I have all the confidence in the world that we will rebound well as a team for tonights 200 free relay as well as tomorrow and Saturday's swims.
GO HAVEN!!

tonight's relay
I am at a loss of words really to describe how awesome tonight went for the haven swim team. We had a super sweet prelim swim...and an even sweeter final swim. When we started our season the team record in this event was a 1:50 something...in november we went 1:49 high, right after thanksgiving we went 1:49.4. I thought we could give the NCAA 'a' cut a run (1:47.49) at PSAC's so we time trialed on the first night of PSAC's and went 1:45.85...I thought at that time we had reached our max speed, no way could we go faster then that....well this morning I was proven wrong. I thought to myself, no way we are going to go faster tonight, and again I was wrong....these ladies continue to really impress / and suprise me. It's really an awesome and weird feeling all at once.
Additional note, I don't think any other team has as many fans as the Haven swimmers do. We have 44 sports administration students, 9 lhu swimmers, 7 additional "friends", 2 LHU profs, all our athletic administration, 1 LHU VP, 10 swim parents & grandparents...all of them have shown an amazing amount of support. The students are always asking when "our" team is swimming (and you know what, it really is "our" team) ... or how they are doing ... or offering up "good jobs" ... it really is special and means a whole lot to me to have the support of all these individuals, especially to all the volunteers who are helping with the running of the meet ... special thanks!!
(ps-my favorite part is when our volunteers cheer, when they really aren't supposed to cheer ... the NCAA committee member who is charged with readying the ready room told me that he didn't have any help with men's 200 med relay b/c the volunteers were all cheering and supporting the haven swimmers)
Finally .... another big day tomorrow. 200 free relay, Jenna's 100 fly & the 400 medley relay.

update...
apologies for the lack of content on the blog so far this week ... it has been a rather hectic trip trip so far, but as we get closer to the actual start of the meet we are it is getting closer to me being in full coach mode, rather than host/coach.
our warm up sessions have been great, a little crowded at times, but overall really soild. we will be swimming tomorrow morning, coming back for a short spell, then the women are going to head to the football hall of fame and I will get at our annual coaches meeting ... after which we will head back to the hotel (I will head to back to the pool if needed) then head to the annual student-athlete banquest. should be a really great day!!
wednesday morning starts the meet ... first (and only) even will be the 200 medley relay!

Saturday Night in Canton
Is not the best time to go and find a place to eat .... at least with a small group.
We went with a few different options .... and settled on a choice of 3 (cici's pizza, a chinese buffet & panera bread) ... all solid choices.
Earlier in the afternoon we went to the pool to check things out and drop some supplies off...looks great! As you can see from the previous post we have our banner already up :-)
GO HAVEN!!
tomorrow morning we are going to get our qualifers up at the "usual time” of 8am. Go on our first field trip (i.e. getting them out of the hotel) to a super wal mart for a supply run … I need to buy some deodrant (and soon!) then drop them off and bring the rest of the group to the pool to do a few final preperations before our crop of volunteers arrives.
Registration begins at 4pm…which is the same time the pool opens for the teams. I plan on getting the women in the pool in the evening.

This Week...
This week has been super busy ... AND, it's only Wednesday morning. (but that is a good thing).
Our 4 national qualifers are looking great in the water, swimming very similar workouts (and going just as fast ... if not faster) that we did leading up to PSAC's.
I will be providing daily updates with how our trip goes (starting Saturday night!)
